Tissue Viability Service

Provides assessment and treatment for people with, or at risk of compromised tissue viability, such as Leg Ulcers and non-healing wounds.

About this service

The service continues to provide the majority of its services but will be prioritising appointments based on patient needs.

Photographs are now required with all new referrals to assist with the assessment process which may include a virtual appointment, and/or an appointment to visit our clinic.  Our clinics are only able to offer a limited number of appointments to allow time for our team to sanitise the clinic room in-between patients.

When attending the clinic patients are asked to: 

  • Please arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to your appointment time.
  • When entering the hospital building please wear a facial covering, unless exempt. You will be temperature checked and asked to sanitise your hands.
  • The waiting area should only be used by those attending with an appointment, space is limited and you are required to socially distance. 
  • Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell or have symptoms indicative of Covid-19.

 

Eligibility criteria

Patients registered with a GP in the NHS Mid Essex area.

All referrals regarding children must, in the first instance, be referred to the Community Children’s Nursing Team.

Exclusion Criteria

The Tissue Viability Service does not cover the following:

  • Patients showing signs of claudication
  • Critical ischemia
  • Diabetic foot ulcer (refer to the Podiatry Service)
  • Oedema without a wound
  • Routine re-dopplers
  • Skin conditions/rash (refer to the Dermatology Service unless varicose eczema)
  • Grade one or two pressure ulcers
  • Varicose veins

Service details

Our team of specialist nurses provide clinic based services and support Community Nursing staff deliver domiciliary visits to patients at home and in Community Hospitals. We also support Practice Nurses in GP Surgeries.

We can assess, diagnose, treat and monitor people with the following problems:

  • Leg or pressure ulcers
  • Complex or non-healing wounds
  • A range of therapies for the promotion of wound healing, including topical negative pressure

Service delivery

The service is available from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday (except Bank Holidays) at Braintree Community Hospital.

 

Referral process

You must be referred by a healthcare professional, such as your GP.
