About This Service

Eligibility criteria

Driver or passanger assistant of a vehicle provided or contracted by Essex County Council, which transports a child with a disability and specialist healthcare needs.

Service details

If your child has a disability and a medical need and travels on Essex County Council home-to-school or social-care transport, our service will ensure the staff on the vehicle have an awareness of your child’s medical needs.

Our team of experienced nurses offer education, training, competency assessment and support for transport staff who work with children with a disability who have any of the following additional healthcare needs:

  • Seizures requiring emergency intervention, such as rectal diazepam, buccal midazolam or rectal paraldehyde.
  • Administration of oxygen.
  • Mouth suction.
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) requiring emergency intervention, such as epipen or anapen.
  • Other needs, which will be considered on an individual basis.

Depending on the needs of your child, we may ask our transport staff to attend classroom training in subjects such as epilepsy or severe allergies. In addition, a nurse will meet with the people caring for your child to go through your child’s individual and specific needs and requirements.

We continue to monitor the competence of staff working with your child, calling them back for training when necessary. We also provide ongoing advice and support to those staff so that they have a point of contact if they have any training issues relating to the care they are undertaking for your child.

Service Delivery

We provide our service throughout the Essex area.

Referral process

Your child will automatically be referred to us if they have a specialist healthcare need when you submit your application for transport.

Once we have received the referral, you will be given a consent form to sign to say that you are happy for us to access healthcare information, before we undertake any training about or with your child.
