Podiatry Service

The service will assess, diagnose, and treat diseases and conditions affecting the feet and lower limbs of both adults and children.

Please see below for details of service changes following the COVID-19 outbreak.

NB: The service is only available to people with a medical condition that adversely affects their feet so all referrals must meet strict eligibility criteria.

About this service

The service continues to provide the majority of its services but will be prioritising appointments based on patient needs. Due to restrictions related to COVID-19, we are only able to deliver service from the Springfield Green clinic. 

When attending the clinic customers are asked to: 

  • Please arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to your appointment time.
  • When entering the clinic building please wear a face covering, unless you are exempt. Masks and sanitiser will be available if needed.
  • If arriving by car, please display your name on a piece of paper in your windscreen and wait in your car until you are contacted by a member of the team.
  • If arriving by public transport, you will be asked to socially distance in the waiting area until you are called in for your appointment.
  • Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell or have symptoms indicative of Covid-19.

Patients are reminded that a photograph is required with the referral, where the photograph is unclear and/or inconclusive patients will be offered an initial virtual consultation. We are not able to guarantee which clinician you will see.

Service details

The team includes podiatrists, podiatry assistants, consultant podiatric surgeons and administration support. They offer a comprehensive range of footcare services, including the following:

  • Preventative treatment for underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Interventions to improve mobility, pain relief.
  • Ulcer debridement and off-loading and maintenance of tissue viability.
  • Education and advice to help you self-manage any problems.
  • Treatment of problems which require short-term care, such as ingrowing toenails, including clinics for nail surgery under local anaesthetic.

We aim to see and treat patients within 18 weeks, but priority is given to those with foot ulcers.

Eligibility criteria

Adults and children who are registered with a GP in the NHS Mid-Essex area and who meet the criteria as set down by the CCG.

The service is ONLY available to people with a medical condition that adversely affects their feet. The following conditions meet our criteria for treatment eligibility; diabetes, circulatory disorders, steroid/chemotherapy, warfarin therapy, neurological problems, rheumatoid arthritis, wounds, ulcers, and any other acute condition such as inflamed or infected in-growing toenails.   Eligibility is not related to age.  

Your healthcare professional will be able to advise you about whether you meet the requirements for the referral.


Service delivery

We hold podiatry clinics Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4.45 pm, at the following locations:

  • Braintree Community Hospital, Chadwick Drive, Braintree, CM27 2QU.
  • Halstead Clinic, Halstead Hospital, 78 Hedingham Road, Halstead, CO9 2DL.
  • Maldon Clinic, St Peter’s Hospital, Spital Road, Maldon, CM9 6EG.
  • Springfield Green Clinic, Springfield Green, Chelmsford, CM1 7HZ.

Please note: Due to restrictions associated with COVID-19 the service is currently only available at the Springfield Green clinic.

Referral process

You can refer yourself by calling the service directly or by completing and sending in a referral form.  Referral forms can be requested by contacting the Care Co-ordination Centre.

You can also be referred by your healthcare professional, such as a GP, nurse, or podiatrist.

You will be required to submit a photograph of the toenail to accompany your referral. 

Please note that the service will only see you if you have a medical condition that puts your feet at risk, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, MS, or Parkinson’s.

We will offer you an appointment within 18 weeks, referrals for conditions such as ulceration will be given priority.

  • 99% said staff treating them introduced themselves.
  • 98% said they were involved as much they wanted to be in decisions about their care and treatment.
  • 98% said they got clear answers to questions.


Good management of your diabetes can prevent other long term health conditions/complications, including foot ulcers.
