Parkinson's Disease Service

Our specialist nurses provide information and support to people with Parkinson's disease to maintain their quality of life, and providing assistance to families and carers.

About this service

The service will offer a virtual appointment for the majority of appointments, a small number of face to face appointments will be available, if appropriate and if it is safe to do so.  

Customers with a clinic appointment will be contacted by telephone ahead of time. When attending the clinic customers are asked to: 

  • Please arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to your appointment time.
  • On arrival, wait in the car park until you are contacted by a member of the team.
  • When entering the clinic building please wear a facial covering, unless exempt. Masks and sanitiser will be available if needed.
  • The waiting area should only be used by users attending a community transport appointment.
  • Not attend if you are feeling unwell or have symptoms indicative of Covid-19.

Eligibility criteria

Adults (18+) registered with a GP in the NHS Mid Essex area with a confirmed medical diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease or Parkinsonian syndrome.

Service details

Our specialist clinicians provide assessment, advice and a holistic approach to treating the symptoms of Parkinson’s, through the following stages of the disease:

  • Diagnosis
  • Maintenance
  • Complex problems
  • Palliative care

We offer the following information and support:

  • Medication review and management.
  • Treatment and access to other professionals, such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and   language therapists and dieticians.
  • Information about local services and support groups.

Service delivery

The service offers clinics in the community at the following locations:

  • St Peter’s Hospital, Maldon
  • St Michaels Hospital, Braintree
  • Springfield Green Clinic, Chelmsford

Appointments must be booked through our office at St Peter’s Hospital in Maldon, which is open part-time Monday to Friday between the hours of 9am to 5pm.

We can provide limited assessments at home for people who are housebound. 

Referral process

  • You must be referred by a healthcare professional, such as a GP or consultant.
  • You will be assessed within two to six weeks of referral, depending on referral urgency.
  • We will contact you to arrange an appointment at a suitable time and location.

  • 97% said they were as involved as they wanted to be in decisions about their care
  • 97% said the nurse dealt with them in a professional manner.

If you are registered with SystmOnline you will be able to view your own Electronic Medical Record (EMR), manage your appointments, request repeat medication, update contact details and message your healthcare service. There is also a SystmOnline app available for Apple and Android devices.
