About this service

We are pleased to inform you that the Healthy Balance service will re-open from 12th October 2020. We have all the necessary precautions in place to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 and to keep participants safe. Some interventions may be offered by telephone or by using video technology where appropriate and in addition we will be delivering strength and balance classes from larger community venues that allow us to adhere strictly to social distancing guidance.  During the period of lockdown many people have become deconditioned and it is more important than ever that people who are at risk of falling undertake a targeted strength and balance programme.
If you have any questions about the service, please feel free to contact us on 0300 303 9988.

Service details

We provide strength and balance exercise classes for people who have fallen, have a fear of falling or would like to increase their confidence in moving about safely.

The classes take place in community venues throughout mid Essex. The classes last for one hour and are free for the first 12 weeks.

All classes are led by qualified postural stability instructors who will tailor the exercises to the individual’s needs and capabilities. Many participants enjoy exercising in a group setting so much that they wish to continue after the 12 weeks and there are follow on community classes available for a small fee.

When a referral is received by the service an exercise professional will arrange to visit the person in their own home to ensure that the classes will be suitable for them and tell them what to expect. They will also carry out simple measures of strength and balance which will be repeated at the end of the programme to see what improvements have been made.

Service delivery

Classes take place week days in the following locations across mid Essex:

  • Burnham-on-Crouch
  • Maldon
  • Halstead
  • Braintree

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to classes?

If you are unable to travel using your own or public transport, there are some very good community transport schemes that take you to classes for a small fee. Find out what community transport is available to you on the Essex County Council website.

Is there a charge for classes?

The first 12 weeks are free. If you enjoy the classes and would like to continue to exercise, we can sign-post you to a community follow-on class. There is a small charge of between £4- £5, depending on the venue.

What should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing that you can easily move around in and supportive, well-fitting shoes.

I haven’t exercised recently will I be able to keep up?

The class instructors are all qualified exercise professionals and will ensure that the exercises are suitable for your level of ability. Over the weeks the instructor will give you more challenging exercises to help you increase your strength and balance, but only at a pace that you are able to manage.

I’m not very confident in group situations?

The class instructors will make you feel welcome and introduce you to the other participants. Most people really enjoy the classes and continue with the follow-on classes as they experience the benefits of improved strength, balance and confidence.
