About This Service

Eligibility criteria

Children registered with a GP within the NHS Mid Essex area (which is covered by North East Essex PCT), who are:

  • of pre-school age.
  • of mainstream primary-school age, where school is needing to support child’s speech, language or communication (old School Action Plus/One Plan).
  • under 16 and attend a special school.

Service details

We offer a package of speech and language therapy support for children of pre-school and primary-school age who have:

  • Speech, language and communication difficulties.
  • Autistic-spectrum disorders.
  • Hearing impairment.
  • Disorders of fluency, such as stammering and stuttering.
  • Disorders of feeding, eating or drinking.
  • Cleft palate and velopharyngeal abnormalities.
  • Speech and language difficulties of neurological origin.
  • Difficulties with voice.

Our speech and language therapists can:

  • Assess speech, language and communication development, skills and difficulties.
  • Assess eating and drinking difficulties.
  • Make a diagnosis.
  • Develop an intervention plan and work with families and carers to implement it.
  • Decide when treatment is complete and the child can be discharged.

Our team includes qualified speech and language therapists, specialist nursery nurses, support workers and an admin team.

We provide our service at these locations:

  • Burnham Clinic
  • St Michael's Health Centre, Braintree
  • Moulsham Lodge Clinic
  • Parkside Medical Centre
  • South Woodham Ferrers Clinic
  • St Peter’s Hospital, Main Building, Maldon
  • Witham Health Centre
  • Halstead Hospital

Plus:

  • Three special schools
  • Five speech and language centres/enhanced provisions
  • Three enhanced provisions for children with hearing impairment
  • Moulsham Grange Children’s Centre, for children who have complex needs
  • Mainstream schools and numerous mainstream early years settings, such as pre-schools and nurseries.

We book appointments Monday to Friday, 8.30am-5pm. In exceptional circumstances we  offer evening appointments, home visits, training or parent consultations or workshops outside these hours.

Referral process

You can be referred by:

  • any healthcare professional, such as a GP, health visitor or children’s community nurse.
  • your child’s school.
  • social care.

Or you can refer your own child by calling us on the number in the contacts box on this page. 

Appointments

We will send you a letter asking you to call us to book an appointment. You must call us within seven working days from the date of your letter to book your appointment.

If we have your mobile telephone number you will receive a text reminder 48 hours before your appointment.

We will see you within 18 weeks of referral.
