About this service

Eligibility criteria

Children aged between seven months and 18 years, who are registered with a GP in the NHS Mid Essex area.

Children in the Halstead area, who are covered by another service.

We are not able to treat ear-related conditions, such as wax or infections. We can, however, refer to an appropriate specialist if necessary.

Service details

Our community-based service provides diagnostic hearing assessments for children, including babies referred to us by the Newborn Hearing Screening programme.

The assessment begins with a brief taking of the child's medical history and a developmental, age-specific hearing assessment.

You will be given a full explanation of the assessment, and results and an appropriate plan of care and management will be decided upon with you. This may include onward referral to the ENT department at the local Acute Trust, to manage persistent glue ear or permanent childhood hearing loss.

You will be provided with a carefully chosen range of relevant information leaflets.

Infection control is a cornerstone of our service. It is the responsibility of all clinical staff to maintain the clinic area and equipment during clinical sessions. It is our practice to use the most up-to-date preferred products for cleaning and decontamination of all equipment, including the toys.

Please note: we are not able to treat ear-related conditions, such as wax or infections. We can, however, refer to an appropriate specialist if necessary.

Service Delivery

We run clinics at different times throughout the week at Stapleford House, Chelmsford.

The audiologist-led clinics are run by a senior paediatric audiologist with the help of trained distracters/nursery nurses.

Referral process

You must be referred by a healthcare profession, such as:

  • Your GP
  • School nurse
  • Health visitors or community nursery nurse
  • Speech & language therapist
